MICRODERMABRASION PROS & CONS

Microdermabrasion (Micro) is a treatment that has been around since the 1950s, used by skin therapists to exfoliate the top layer of the skin, leaving it feeling smooth and soft. Microdermabrasion shows an immediate response on the surface of the skin, which is why some people love it and sing its virtues! There are two types of micro, diamond and crystals. Stay away from crystals as the small particles aren’t good to inhale into the lungs!

Our skin is constantly shedding dead cells to clear toxins and make room for new skin cells. Your skin turns over completely every 28 days, but this slows as we age. Having a bit of help to remove those built-up cells aids the function and appearance of your skin, but some cells can stay on the surface causing a dull or rough appearance. Microdermabrasion is a manual form of exfoliation that works simply by removing these cells. Microdermabrasion is quick, with no downtime or pain, and has the added benefit of lymphatic drainage due to the 'vacuum suctioning ' of the machine.

How does microdermabrasion compare to a peel? They both exfoliate, but that is about the only similarity. A peel exfoliates but also works on a deeper level to stimulate hydration and improve cell function. It also helps to infuse products you use deeper into the skin, enhancing your results. Peels come in a variety of types and strengths that can be tailored to most skin types and concerns, compared to microdermabrasion that is only suitable for a thickened or coarse skin and treats only the surface. On a fragile, fine skin it can be too aggressive, causing redness and making the skin more sensitive. It also is a treatment which you wouldn’t want to have too often. As it is manually removing the top layer of skin, it ideally coincides with the skin’s natural renewal (around every 28 days), so we would suggest once a month at most. For those who regularly have microdermabrasion, post your treatment is the perfect time to have a treatment that gives back to your skin after you have removed the skin's surface layer. For example, Omnilux Light Therapy or a Vitamin Infusion of vitamins and antioxidants

You won’t find a course of microdermabrasion on our menu, simply because it’s not the best thing for almost all skins! We believe microdermabrasion is amazing for thickened and coarse skin, and it can help improve the appearance of dull or rough skin quickly, but more effective choices have superseded it. It's important for us as industry leaders and Auckland's leading skin experts to use our knowledge and training to offer treatments that suit client skin types. Our reputation relies on us providing more than just passing trends but instead offering effective treatments for clients to reach their skin goals.

Sunscreen - What's the difference? | About Man

Sunscreen - What’s the difference?

Physical vs. Chemical

As the weather starts to heat up, so does the sunscreen debate. We all know that wearing sunscreen daily year-round is incredibly important in protecting your skin from the harsh NZ sun. However, some of you might not understand what the difference is between a physical and chemical sunscreen.

Physical sunscreens work by sitting on the surface of your skin and protect it by reflecting UVA and UVB rays away via mineral filters (zinc oxide and titanium oxide). These products don't absorb into the skin, but remain on the surface. Essentially, they create a physical barrier between your skin and the sun.

So what about Chemical sunscreens? Chemical sunscreens absorb into your skin and then absorb the UVA/UVB rays, convert the rays to heat, and releases them from the body. You have to put chemical sunscreen on, at least 20 minutes before heading outside, so it has had the chance to absorb into your skin.

The pros of a chemical sunscreen are that it’s not as thick, making it ideal for daily wear and spreading easily onto the skin. The pros of a physical sunscreen is that is can be less irritating for sensitive skin types, and tends to be more attractive for those who value natural ingredients. The ingredient zinc oxide found in physical sunscreens also blocks the widest spectrum of UVA and UVB rays, and you’re instantly protected after application. With a chemical block, you’re not protected until it’s absorbed into the skin.

Both chemical and physical protect you from the sun, so that's the most important thing - but now you know the difference, you can choose what suits you and your skin best!

ur top two sunscreen picks this summer are:

  1. Elta MD Pure - with a physical block like our Elta MD Pure, you are protected from the moment you put it on. Elta MD Pure is definitely our top sunscreen pick for your face. Post Beach Skincare | About Man

Nothing says New Zealand summer, like day's spent relaxing at the beach and nights around the barbecue.

Sun, sand, and salt are essentials to any Kiwi Summer, but it’s important to know how to care for your skin after a sunny beach day.  Replenishing moisture as soon as you can will help ensure your skin stays strong, supple, and healthy all Summer long. Here are our top 3 tips for post-beach skincare!

Wash off - after applying sunscreen and hopefully reapplying during the day, it's important to clean your body well to get rid of any product build-up. Leaving salt water and SPF on your skin can cause it to become itchy, red or irritated, so it is best to remove any dirt and impurities as soon as possible.  Avoid using a soap bar or sulphate based body wash which can dry out your skin even more, instead opt for a hydrating body wash to help remove salt, sand and any lingering SPF.  Our go-to is Pure Fiji's Shower Gel to clean and refresh skin; it is a  gentle and nourishing gel containing natural cleansers derived from coconut and sugar cane to ease away accumulated impurities, while pineapple extracts gently brighten skin tone - leaving skin replenished and rejuvenated.

Moisturise - sun and sea can be drying on the skin so once you have showered off it's the perfect time to apply a hydrating body lotion to your entire body. Applying body lotion right after you shower will seal in your skin moisture, keeping it hydrated and smooth.  We recommend going for something oil based that absorbs quickly, our fave is Pure Fiji’s Coconut Body Lotion with its four nut extracts blended with fresh coconut milk it will rapidly hydrate, nourish and protect your skin.

If sunburn is an issue, using Pure Fiji’s After Sun is a must. Boasting a cool and calm collection of anti-inflammatories and essential fatty acids, vitamins and nutrients this product will take any heat out of sunburnt or wind burnt skin. It's also hydrating and nourishing while helping to cool the skin and therefore helps the skin not to peel. A top tip to help take the heat out of any sunburn is to keep After Sun chilled in the fridge, the cooling gel with take the sting away and give instant relief.

Lips - can easily be forgotten but are one of the most common areas to get sunburnt, dry and cracked. Start by investing in a good lip protector with SPF and apply throughout the day to help take care of your gentle lip area. Coola Liplux SPF 30, is an all-in-one lip treatment that moisturises and protects with broad spectrum SPF. At night we recommend using a balm based lip product that doesn’t contain an SPF to lock in moisture and to help avoid cracked or sore lips. Pure Fiji's Lip Balm is non-greasy and will lock in hydration overnight.

Stress less – adopt a simple skincare routine | About Man

Stress less – adopt a simple skincare routine

If you're feeling stressed and fatigued, chances are it will be showing on your face.

Puffy eyes, dark circles, and dry, dull skin are all signs you're burning the candle at both ends.  Keeping a simple skincare routine means you will actually do it as well as improve your skin! Here's a simple checklist to get you looking your best for the party season ahead:

1. Cleanse: Your skin will repay you for that big night out by looking blotchy, oily and dull. The first step in a simple and effective skincare routine is to cleanse twice a day. Throughout the day your skin is continually exposed to pollutants, dirt, and bacteria. Cleansing your face is the first building block to how all your other skincare works, without removing all these daily impurities your other products struggle to penetrate. A great all skin type cleanser is Ultraceuticals Balancing Gel Cleanser, it leaves your skin feeling fresh and calm with a smooth after feel. RRP $65,200ml. Available in clinic only.

2. Exfoliate: Your next step is to try regular exfoliation once or twice a week with Pure Fiji Exfoliating Scrub. This well-balanced face scrub will remove dead skin cells, clean out dirty pores and reveal the fresh layers of good skin underneath.

3. Correct: A correcting serum is the workhorse of any skincare routine. Using a serum underneath your moisturiser can target and correct certain skin concerns. We recommend coming in for a Skin Consult with one of About Man's Skin Experts to help determine which serum is best to treat your concerns. Book in now.

4. Use an eye cream: A good eye cream is a man's secret weapon against dry and ageing skin. Apply twice a day after you cleanse, to nourish, hydrate and smooth the skin around your eyes. Try Environs VitA - Peptide Eye Gel, this eye gel contains essential vitamins, antioxidants and specially selected peptides for use on the delicate and sensitive eye area. It assists in hydrating the skin and minimising the appearance of fine lines, helping skin to look younger for longer. RRP $110, available in clinic only.

5. Hydrate and Protect: During the day while your in and out of the office keep it simple by using a moisturiser with SPF, we recommend Ultraceuticals Mattifying SPF 30+, RRP $79.00.  If your job requires you to be outdoors or you're on the boat over the weekend then you will need to use something more grunty like EltaMD UV Pure Water-Resistant Face & Body Physical Sunscreen SPF 47 RRP $60.00.  No, you don't want to use an SPF at night so grabbing a nourishing night moisturiser to help restore balance to your skin while you sleep is a good idea.  Some of our favourites are Ultra Hydrating Lotion, RRP $ 95 or Environ's AVST range which starts at RRP $81.00, both available in clinic only.

If your unsure what products are right for your skin type and concerns, then come in and speak to us! We will help guide you in the right direction and streamline a skincare routine that's simple, effective and most of all doable! Book in now

The truth about peels | About Man

The truth about peels

We answer some of the most common questions about Skin Peels

Who should have a skin peel? Almost every skin benefits from a Skin Peel. There are many options available, depending on skin type and skin concern. A skilled and knowledgeable therapist will be able to point you in the right direction for which is best suited to your skin type and your particular concerns.

Peels have had a bad rap over the past few years, how have they improved? I think the “bad rap” is more to do with people not fully understanding what a Skin Peel treatment is and how it can benefit their skin. People may worry a skin peel will leave them with flaking or “peeling” skin. Peels have a range of intensity from superficial to deeper. They work in different two ways, firstly they exfoliate, and secondly, they hydrate by allowing the product to penetrate more effectively.

The majority of peels won’t make you peel and have little or no downtime. Some deeper peels can make your skin flake superficially. If this were the most beneficial skin peel for you, your skin expert would discuss this with you before the treatment. Peels are of particular benefit to areas like face, neck, decollete and hands, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, evening out skin colour and exfoliating to help treat acne scars and sun damage.

What peels do you offer at About Man? At About Man, we have a large “toolbox” to work from, including gentle peels like lactic acid, enzyme and several others. Our Skin Experts will make a bespoke Skin Plan for you keeping in mind your skin type, concerns and your budget to give you the best results. By having a large variety of peels to choose from, we tailor make your treatment on the day as to what your skin needs.

Our two newest Ultraceuticals peels, A-Zyme and Radiance Plus+ treatments are heavy hitters and have proven to be very popular and specifically target different skin concerns. The  Radiance Plus+ treatment is perfect for those concerned with pigmentation, sunspots and age spots. If you have a wedding, a special event coming up or are concerned with pigment, this is the treatment for you! The A-Zyme Peel treatment is fantastic for those concerned with fine lines, premature ageing or dull, dehydrated skin.

What results can you expect to see? You can expect to see visible results after one treatment; however, we usually recommend a series of peel for some skin conditions.  Your skin should feel and look smoother, brighter and fresher.  Peels help stimulate cell turnover and improve skin cell function. You will notice a knock-on effect after every treatment you have.   Some skin concerns do take longer to treat, and you may require several.

What is the best season to have a skin peel? Peels are safe to have all year round, but you do need to be careful with your UV exposure particularly if you're having them to help with pigmentation, this is because your fresh new skin is now sitting at the top. Make sure you are wearing a great quality SPF daily and topping up during the day, wear a cap and sunglasses as well when in the sun.  We recommend EltaMD UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 as it’s a physical sunscreen works as soon as you apply it. Chemical-based sunscreens, usually have a stand-down period of 30mins after application. EltaMD is available in clinic only.

Can peels be used in conjunction with other skin treatments? Peels are fine as a stand-alone treatment however we firmly believe by combing treatments together you dramatically improve the effectiveness and results. For example directly after a peel is an ideal time to infuse other serums for best results. So by doing a vitamin infusion after your peel, or treatment mask you are getting maximum results.

What's your best skin peel tip? Ask your Skin Expert lots of questions! Are they are experienced and know the products they are working with inside out. What benefits does this have for your skin?  Listen to your therapist's aftercare advice, and stick to it!  Most importantly wear your physical SPF 30+ religiously and keep a hat on if you are out in the sun.

Get protected | About Man

Get protected

We know! We often harp on about being sun safe, but it’s damn well important!

With Summer and Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to dust off your SPF and check the expiry date before topping up on the most critical product in your bathroom. You should be wearing an SPF every day but it is absolutely essential if you work outdoors and even while driving, as the sun can damage your skin through the glass. A blasé attitude will come back to bite you in the form of wrinkles or even worse, cancerous melanoma from UV damage. Look for a broad-spectrum SPF, meaning it protects against both UVA rays (which prematurely age skin) and UVB rays (which cause burning and redness).

For a quick science lesson: There are two types of sunscreen and the one you choose should depend on your lifestyle. Chemical sunscreens have a light easily absorbed texture and work by absorbing UV rays into the skin, converting them to heat and releasing them from the body.  Chemical SPF blocks are suited for day to day wear around the city or if you have an office job, it takes 20 minutes once applied to become effective.

While physical sunscreens are zinc based and have a thicker texture when applied. They work by creating a barrier on the surface of the skin which reflects the sun's rays, the ideal choice if you’re the active outdoorsy-type a builder or landscaper and work requires you to be outside most of the day. They tend to be less irritating for sensitive skin and are longer-lasting than their chemical counterparts. Physical sunscreens also start working as soon as they're applied (no 20-minute wait) and stop more UV radiation reaching the skin, making them the top choice if you plan to spend the day on the water with a fishing rod in one hand and a cold beer in the other.

Once you've made your choice, don’t forget to slather it on behind your ears and on the back of your neck. If you think you are off the hook with a darker skin, a not so fun fact: Bob Marley died of melanoma at the age of 36.  Darker skins have a longer to burn time due to higher levels of melanin in the skin but UV light still creates the same free radical damage in darker skins as it does for fair skin.  If you notice any changes in your skin or have an unusual mole we recommend getting a mole map and start summer knowing your skin is healthy and protected.

If your unsure about which Sunscreen you should be wearing for your lifestyle, come in and see one of our Skin Experts to guide you in the right direction.

Read what Richie Stott thinks of our ” The complete Works Facial”

Richie Stott – Director of Propel Brands There's no point beating around the bush; I am worried about the lines under my eyes. S

The treatment - About Man, The Complete Works Facial, allow 75 minutes.
Scheduling time out of the office for a facial seemed excessive, but after the session, I had with a skin expert at Auckland’s first luxury men's clinic I understand now why it's essential.
Once I had aired my concerns: the look of fatigue I carry around under my eyes - the treatment began with deep cleansing, followed by some serious skin buffing, in my case an exfoliating peel. Next, the sonophoresis machine (which sounds like high-pitch whale music) helps push vitamins A and C from the skin serums deep into my complexion. The firm massage, (not going to lie this is the best part of this session), and finally the LED light (known as Omnilux Plus Light) helps hydrate and brighten my face. At least 60 minutes of this 75-minute facial is a dream. Yes, it's designed to correct my concerns, with cleansing, hydrating and brightening, however, once the lights are dim and the massage begins, I did apologise in advance for nodding off, (it's hard to report back on a facial when you’re asleep) - the results speak volumes.
The verdict?
The exfoliation, light therapy and hands-on massage, combined with the brow tidy gave a look of freshness to my skin that has helped erase five years from my face. It's worth every cent of the $260 - and to quote The Terminator - 'I'll be back'.

Triumph & Disaster - Natural, Effective & Bespokeā€Ž | About Man

Triumph & Disaster - Natural, Effective & Bespokeā€Ž

A chat with Dion Nash provides an in-depth look into his iconic kiwi skincare brand

The beginning - Triumph & Disaster is an iconic Kiwi brand, and fast becoming strong internationally, how did the concept start?

I started out in life as a sports jock. A cricket mad sports jock to be precise, I chased this as far as I could and was lucky enough to play professionally and represent New Zealand for a decade before retiring due to a series of back injuries. In hindsight this was a lucky twist of fate as it gave me time to refocus and have another dig so to speak.  After sport I ran into Geoff Ross and the guys setting up New Zealand Vodka brand 42Below and hung on to their shirttails long enough to learn a bit about selling, branding and marketing, all of which sort of leads me to today.

Skincare was a more natural calling that you might think, its actually very close to a cricketers heart because when you stand in the sun and wind everyday for hours on end you learn to appreciate the finer points of a moisturiser, sunscreen and the joy of exfoliation. So I felt like I had an industrial knowledge of the category, and I had learnt some skills I wanted to put into practice.  The name comes from Rudyard Kipling, at about 13 years of age my father gave me a framed poem called ‘IF’ by him. The poem is advice from a father to his son on how to be a man. It is about humility, honour, risk and reward. Values that would help mould a brand capable of reminding us that acts of ritual and preparation are worthy endeavours and that being well presented is something of which to be proud.  So when a tattered old poem that my dad had given me years before was uncovered in the bottom of an old chest and I read the line, ‘if you can meet with Triumph & Disaster and treat those two imposters just the same’, well, the deal was done and the brand was born.

The rest of story as they say …is still ahead of us…

Your mantra - With nature as the basis for your products, what is the Triumph & Disaster philosophy?

Ashes to ashes dust to dust - what comes from the earth goes back to it. - There really is no excuse to use synthetics and nasty chemicals anymore. Perhaps there never was. The lasted green science is better than anything else out there and utilizes ingredients that the body has become familiar with over thousands of years in nature, and therefore are gentle on it. It was a simple choice especially when you start to dig into some of the ingredients that have become commonplace. Take denatured alcohol for example – its only there as a form of paint thinner, it has no place in skin care.   So we believe in Natural, natural, natural. The skin has been exposed to our ingredients for thousands of years. We know they are non toxic and safe. Synthetic chemicals cannot make the same claim. Natural feels better on the skin and interacts better with our skins chemical balance. We are seeing that the clinical trials are proving the same levels of effectiveness of performance for things like skin tightening, toning, lifting, and  healing across the board. So we see no upside at all in traditional synthetic cosmetic ingredients – part from the cost of production : ).

Point of Difference - How do your products vary from other skin care products?

We use a lot of native NZ and pacific region ingredients, these make our formulations entirely bespoke and unique in the world, but also they make for incredibly effective ingredients that we have drawn from Polynesian traditional medicine and culture

Below are a couple of standouts;

HOROPITO - Horopito is an ancient herb that grows only in New Zealand. A sturdy shrub that has survived 65 million years by developing chemicals that resisted not only animals and insects but also microbes like fungi and bacteria. The plant also contains powerful antioxidant flavonoids, including quercetin and taxifolin. Indigenous Maori used Horopito to treat wounds, as a tea tonic, a poultace and they chewed it for toothache. We use it to treat blemishes as a sterilizing agent in our Gameface moisturiser.

Oil of Tamanu – from Tahiti. Used for centuries in Vanuatu and Tahiti. Often referred to as ‘miracle oil’ Tamanu oil possesses a unique capacity to assist the formation of new tissue, thereby accelerating wound healing and the growth of healthy skin. Tamanu oil is employed by Polynesian women for promoting healthy, clear, blemish-free skin, and is also used on babies to prevent diaper rash and skin eruptions we use it in our Face Cleanser as it is a great treatment for skin irritations and mild acne.

Ponga Fern - polysaccharides extracted from the fern when applied to the skin in lotion form have been clinically proven to have an immediate mechanical tightening effect that decreases wrinkles and increases tonicity and firmness, so we think it makes for a killer ingredient in our Gameface moisturiser.

Can’t live without - From your range of products, what’s your fav and why?

1.Gameface moisturiser – everyday twice a day. Has proven lift and tightening properties due to Ponga fern polysaccharide’s that tone the skin. – I love this product
 2. Our new LOGIC – face toner – great for any blemishes or adult acne – killer product.

The future - Where do you see Triumph & Disaster in 5 years?

More products that give greater permission to women to come to the brand.  A continued commitment to raising our own internal standards and demanding more and better for the customer.
